Barpeta is renowned in the Historical map of Assam as the "Land of the Satras". These Satras bear impression of the great Assamese reformer, saint and cultural exponent Srimanta Shankardeva who arrived from Upper Assam in the 16th Century and laid the foundation of Vaishnavite Reform movement in the region.
Barpeta is also renowned as the granary of Assam. Rice, vegetables, jute and fruits from Barpeta are supplied not only to Assam but to other parts of India too. Barpeta district is also the leading producer of Fishes. Apart from this, Barpeta is also famous for its Bell metal industry and products, Bamboo craft and theatre.
District Administration, Barpeta is tasked with the all round development of the district by means of constant monitoring review and implementation (in some sectors) of various government schemes and programme. We are responsible for the maintenance of law and order in the district along with the Police Department. Issuance of various kinds of certificates, documents and information falls within the purview of district administration. We are also entrusted with the conduct of elections to Lok Sabha, State Assembly as well as local bodies. In all its duties, District Administration endeavour to be responsive, transparent, accountable & service oriented.
